Giampiero Galeaci (Rome, May 18, 1946 – November 12, 2021)
Italian journalist, sports commentator, TV presenter and rowing athlete.

The director of many sports shows from “Mercoledi Sport” and “90 minuto”. Also known by the nickname “Bisteccone” (Beef steak) for his large size (given to him by the journalist Gilberto Evangelisti) of Piedmontese origin from his father (province of Novara) ), he graduated in Economics with a thesis in statistics.

Worked for a few months at FIAT’s marketing and advertising office in Turin. He was a professional rower: he won the Italian singles championship in 1967 (which awarded him a bronze medal for athletic courage) and in the sculls with Giuliano Spingard. in 1968 and also in that year he participated in the selection for the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. His father had won the Europeans in rowing in c. 1932. Not yet abandoning his sports career, he was hired by RAI as a sports journalist, thanks to Evangelist first on the radio. Fast forward to the 1972 Munich Olympics; due to an unexpected event to Mirko Petternella, stuck in the fencing system, he made his first comment in his discipline, rowing. With the arrival of Emilio Rossi at the helm of TG1, on the advice of Tito Stagno, he went to television and apart from some news broadcasts, the first sports broadcasts were on “Domenica Sportiva” (E Diela Sportive) directed by Paolo Frajese in 1976 and as curator of Sport on Wednesday “Mercoledi Sport”.

He was then immediately assigned to tennis commentary, alternating with Guido Oddo until his retirement in 1984 and above all his sport, rowing, of which he covered the main competitions, including 6 editions of the Olympic Games until Athens in 2004.

From 2008 at the Beijing Olympics he was replaced by Marco Lollobrigida. In the eighties he was sent to Domenica Sportiva for key matches of the Serie A football championship. In 1986 he did one of his few non-sports reports: he was RAI’s correspondent at the meeting between Gorbachev and Reagan in Reykjavík, where it was for the Champions Cup match between Valur and Juventus. From 1992 for 5 years he directed the columns “Cambio di campo” (Change of the field), “Solo per i finali” (Only for the finals) and “90º minuto”, in which he showed his comic streak in numerous sketches unedited.

In 1999 he directed 90 minutes on Sunday for Serie A Championship matches. In 1996 Pippo Baudo wanted him at the 46th Festival of Sanremo. In the same year he was the voice of Mr. Swackhammer, the main antagonist of the movie Space Jam. His comments on the occasion of the gold medals in rowing by Giuseppe and Carmine Abbagnale at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and by Antonio Rossi and Beniamino Bonomi at Sydney 2000 are unforgettable, characterized by extraordinary enthusiasm.

In the summer of 2009 he commented on Confederations Cup matches with Jacopo Volpi and Zibi Boniek. For the 2009-2010 season, he was a football commentator in the 90th minute broadcast with Franco Lauro and in Replay with Zibi Boniek. In the summer he participated in World Nights with Paola Ferrari, Maurizio Costanzo, live from Piazza di Siena in Rome. He then became a 90th minute commentator with Franco Lauro, Jacopo Volpi and Zibi Boniek, and the 90th minute of the Champions League with Andrea Fusco, Marino Bartoletti, Adriano Bacconi and Ivan Zazzaroni. In the summer of 2012 he was a guest of European Nights with Andrea Fusco, Simona Rolandi, Jacopo Volpi, Adriano Bacconi and Serse Cosmi. Radio comedian Nicola Savino often lent his voice to parody Galeazzi. He died in Rome on November 12, 2021, at the age of 75, suffering from diabetes. The last television appearance dates back to 2018 in “Domenia In”. He was a fan of the Lazio football team, which he often showed during the sports shows he hosted.
