(VIDEO) 1964 | The first official match of the Albanian National Team in the World Cup.
It’s Sunday, May 24, 1964.
In the Rotterdam “De Kuip” stadium, in the presence of 31,000 spectators, the Netherlands and Albania descend on the green field.
For our national team, this is the first official match in the World Cup qualifiers at the representative level.
The referee of the meeting is the Irishman John Meighan.
The teams have the following composition:
Netherlands: Eddy Pieters Graafland; Cor Veldhoen; Daan Schrijvers; Guus Haak; Hans Kraay Sr.; Fons van Wissen; Bennie Muller; Pummy Bergholtz; Lambert Verdonk; Klaas Nuninga’; Piet Kruiver
Coach: Elek Schwartz
Albania: Mikel Janku; Skender Halili; Fatmir Frasheri; Fatbardh Deliallisi; Lin Shllaku; Ali Mema; Mehdi Bushati; Pavlo Bukovik; Panjot Pano; Robert Jashari; Bahri Ishka
Coach: Zyber Konci
From left to right: Ali Mema, Robert Jashari, Mehdi Bushati, Bahri Ishka, Pavllo Bukoviku, Panajot Pano; sitting from left to right: Fatbardh Deliallisi, Mikel Janku, Lin Shllaku, Skënder Halili, Fatmir Frashëri.
This is how our national team’s long road to the World Cup begins. The first half of this match, which ended with the nets untouched 0-0, was better for our representative team, which went down more often in the direction of the Dutch goal, but it was completely inaccurate.
In the second half, the locals scored twice within a span of 4-5 minutes. In the 48th minute, Shrijvers scored a penalty and in the 52nd minute, Muller made the score 2-0 with a header. The result does not change and thus registers the first defeat in this historic start for Albania.
