Sir Robert Charlton (1937-2023)

English footballer who played as attacking midfielder, central midfielder and left wing has changed his life. Widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, he was a member of the England team that won the 1966 FIFA World Cup, the year he also won the Ballon d’Or. World football mourns the death of Bobby Charlton. The Manchester United and England legend has passed away aged 86 after a long battle with dementia.

The player’s family announced the news: “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Sir Bobby passed away peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning” (October 21).

Bobby Carlton is considered one of the greatest English players in history. He was one of the leaders of the England team that won the World Cup in 1966 and, in the same year, won the Ballon d’Or. His career is most associated with Manchester United where he played from 1956 to 1973, winning three league titles and the European Cup in 1968. It was the legendary Matt Busby who discovered him and later captained Red Devils (249 goals in 758 games) and symbol of the team that dominated England (and beyond) mainly in the 60s.
